By: David Schwartz It is a popular adage that there is no beauty without pain. This concept—usually meant to encourage proper exercise, doing your hair and makeup and wearing uncomfortable heels—is eerily appropriate when it comes to tanning. The fashion—a predominantly 20th-21st century preference—has led to an addictive habitual trend that includes the obsessive use of tanning beds, accelerators, spray-tans and sun-induced tans. As word of the dangers involved in tanning continues to spread, people are turning towards indoor methods like tanning beds. A popular misconception (among young people especially) is that indoor tanning is a safer route to go because it is controlled and it doesn’t expose you to the sun’s rays. The fact, however, is that using tanning beds still subjects you to harmful amounts of UVB and UVA rays that can and do cause melanoma. On top of that, tanning beds expose you to harmful levels of carcinogenic radiation that can also cause cancers. In fact, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, young adults who use tanning beds increase their chances of developing melanoma by up to 75%. David E. Fisher, MD (chairman of the dermatology department and professor at Harvard’s Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School) agrees. “Many people believe that a tan is natural and healthy and [that] a sunburn is the sign of overexposure. Actually, all forms of tanning, with or without burns, are dangerous.” And yet still the social stigma that you must be tan to be beautiful outweighs the warnings. In California, where golden tans are the social standard, the problem has become so prevalent that a bill (SB 746) was recently passed that actually banned indoor tanning for teenagers under 18 years old. Californiawas already one of 30 states in the union that places restrictions on minors; the previous rule was that teenagers between 14 and 17 years old can practice indoor tanning with parental consent.Californiais the first state in the country to legally ban indoor tanning for minors. The bill was supported by the California Medical Association, Kaiser Permanente, theAmericanAcademyof Pediatrics and Anthem Blue Cross. It was sponsored by the California Society of Dermatology & Dermatological Surgery and the Aim at Melanoma Foundation. It was presented by state senator Ted Lieu. The bill (passed in early June) falls in line with the World Health Organization’ About SIMSYS-MoleMate The FDA approved SIMSYS-MoleMate Skin Imaging System, a non-invasive skin cancer screening procedure, is a significant advance in the early detection of potentially life threatening moles and lesions. Physicians have found the SIMSYS-MoleMate Siascope hand-held device easy to learn and use, and that it rapidly provides accurate images of the pigment, blood, and collagen below the mole or lesion. Now, for the first time, physicians can more accurately evaluate suspicious moles and lesions in a non-invasive, pain-free way. Experts also believe it may reduce the need for time consuming and expensive biopsies. For more information about SIMSYS-MoleMate, Contact: MedX Health Corp.
