Oct. 18, 2011 - PRLog -- Local reproductive endocrinologist, Dr. Craig R. Sweet, is working with other physicians and practices to determine the causes of some early pregnancy losses. His research with representatives from around the country was recently shared at the annual American Society of Reproductive Medicine conference in Orlando, Florida.

Founder and Medical Director of Specialists in Reproductive Medicine & Surgery in Fort Myers, Dr. Sweet and other reproductive colleagues collaborated on research with Reprogenetics in Livingston, NJ, that used Array Comparative Genomic Hybridization (array CGH) to improve karytotyping, a technique that analyzes chromosomal problems such as those seen in early pregnancy losses. Array CGH allowed the group to directly analyze the pregnancy loss cells. This method provided more accurate results by preventing a common problem occurring when the cells don’t grow or when maternal cells overgrow miscarriage cells in the laboratory evaluation process.

It is estimated that 50-70% of early pregnancy losses are due to chromosomal problems such as extra or missing chromosomes. Everyone that miscarries wants to know why it occurred and this type of information can be used to help predict the success or failure of the next pregnancy. Though this work is preliminary, it will advance the understanding of pregnancy loss and is the start of a broad leap forward with far more accurate results compared to the classic but flawed routine karyoptyping.
