So, the first part of any CCTV system that you are likely to think of is the cameras, so these are where we will start. As you will probably know, there are various different types of cameras available to purchase, but the two most common ones are the bullet camera and the dome camera. The bullet camera is a camera that looks exactly like the CCTV camera that you have in your mind – it is overt and provides a visual deterrent to people looking to commit a crime. The downsides are that they are easy to damage and also they don’t move as fast as a dome camera, therefore meaning that it is harder to track people with them. A dome camera, on the other hand, allows a more covert system, as people can’t see where the camera is pointing. They are also better protected, although they don’t provide the same deterrent levels as a bullet camera.

Another integral part of the CCTV system is the security DVR, which is the hub of everything that occurs in the system – some people refer to it as the brain. It is here that all of the various features are controlled but its most important use is the fact that the security DVR stores all of the recorded information. The best DVRs allow for an easy playback of any footage and will also come with a large amount of storage, to make sure that you can keep footage for a long time without having to overwrite it.

The final main component of the CCTV system is the CCTV monitor, which will be the part of the system that the operator will have the most amount of interaction with – unless they have movable cameras, when the controls will always be in use. A CCTV monitor does not have to be expensive, but obviously the more money you spend, the higher the quality of the image will be. It is important to remember that the quality of the image seen is not going to be the same as the image that is being recorded, so ensure that you regularly take a look at the recorded footage to make sure that it is of good enough quality.
