Original 30s ‘Punch’ Cartoon Unearthed Vintage Seekers

A 1936 drawing by popular cartoonist Ernest Howard "EH" Shepard for ‘Punch’ magazine joins the Vintage Seekers Collectibles range this week.

Nov. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- E H Shepard was better known for his children’s book illustrations, bringing to life iconic characters like Winnie the Pooh in A.A. Milne series – a deluxe volume of which is also listed in Vintage Seeker’s rare books collection – and the animal cast of Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows.

However, Shepard famously regretted illustrating Winnie the Pooh as he felt it overshadowed his work as a political cartoonist. E H Shepard in fact worked as a cartoonist for ‘Punch’, the famous English satirical magazine, from 1921 until 1953.

The pen and ink sketch featured on Vintage Seekers makes reference to the 1936 coal dispute. In a charmingly witty take on the incident, Mr Punch is depicted with a copy of a newspaper whose headline reads "COAL DISPUTE" and his dog holds an empty scuttle whilst pointing to the small amount of coal on the fire.
