By: William E. Lewis Jr. Benefiting Horses and the Handicapped of South Florida, the Old West will come alive at Ronnie Bergeron’s Green Glades Ranch on February 17th. Scheduled that night is a Western evening focused on promoting the 9th Annual Meggan Morency Memorial Ride-a-Thon on March 3rd. Featuring a western-style casino, and a night of dining, dancing, and entertainment, it will be hosted by former Miami Dolphin, NBC sportscaster, and WQAM radio personality Joe Rose. The evening will include a live auction with items ranging from a chance to be Sheriff for the Day, to a weekend at an Islamorada vacation home, as well as an Airboat Adventure. "This will be a great opportunity to come out and have fun while at the same time promoting awareness of Horses and the Handicapped and the outstanding young woman for whom the ride-a-thon is named." said Bill Burke, President of Paradise Bank. “Last year, we raised over $50,000 and had more than 200 people in attendance.” The Ride-a-Thon honors the memory of Meggan Morency, who in 2003 was fatally injured in a jumping accident. It will be held on March 3rd in Coconut Creek at the Horses and the Handicapped Vegso Family Arena at Tradewinds Park. Styled as a celebration of Meggan's life and a reminder of her love of horses, the ride-a-thon has several components. Among them are the “Witness the Magic Horse Show” presented by students of Horses and the Handicapped, a Ride-a-Thon through the horse trails of Tradewinds Park, and a midway featuring games, prizes and a petting zoo. The event will also feature barbecue style lunches as well as popcorn, cotton candy and snow cones. "This year's Ride-a-Thon will include something for every member of the family," said Broward County Court Chief Traffic Magistrate Brenda Di Ioia, Event Chairwoman. “We are also proud to have Jen Klaassens, director of programs for the Wasie Foundation as our Honorary Chair this year.” In addition to Paradise Bank, the Wasie Foundation and Rick Case Automotive Group have joined as top-level “Duke” sponsors. Other sponsors include the Bergeron Family of Companies, Island Water Sports, Parkland Auto, the city of Coconut Creek, William E. Lewis, Jr. & Associates, Top Notch Productions, and the Broward County Parks and Recreation Department.
