MPV Announces Appointment Of Imam Daayiee Abdullah Director Of LGBTQ Outreach Program

Dec. 29, 2011 - PRLog -- It is our pleasure to announce that Imam Daayiee Abdullah has been appointed Director of our newly created LGBTQ Outreach Program. As a long standing member of Muslims for Progressive Values, the current Organizer of the Washington, D.C. Chapter of MPV and a lifetime civil rights activist, Imam Daayiee joins other progressive Muslim leaders in creating inclusive spaces where all can enjoy dignity and justice.

As Director of the LGBTQ Outreach Program, Imam Daayiee Abdullah contributes to MPV his already proven initiative and centralizes communication, program development and public education around issues affecting the LGBTQ-Muslim community.

The LGBTQ Outreach Program will include:
* A counseling service setup for LGBTQ teenagers and youths.
* A workshop and educational program for Muslim parents of LGBTQ children.
* A retreat for LGBTQ Muslims and their parents.

The program will include face-to-face counseling, on-line lectures, printed educational materials (in English and in various foreign languages predominantly spoken in the U.S.) and a retreat for Muslim parents and their LGBT children.

Imam Daayiee Abdullah’s extensive education and experience, in areas of secular law, Qur’anic exegesis, Shari’ah as well as Fiqh (Islamic law), are the foundation from which he draws upon in his services and lectures. As LGBTQ activist, he has been closely involved as advisor for legislation that affects the LGBTQ community in both Canada and the U.S. As Director of LGBTQ Outreach, he will continue to advocate for the rights of women and sexual minorities, while providing pastoral counseling to LGBTQ youth and adults, which he has done for over 10 years. Imam Daayiee Abdullah has also conducted solemnizations of marriages for over 10 years and is able to conduct legally binding marriages as a licensed officiant in Washington, DC.
