By: Klaruw Phil, who set up and has run the Widnes-based operation since 1986, will remain involved in the business acting as a technical consultant from January 2012. Day-to-day running of Klaruw’s UK direct contracting service, sales and technical support for K190 bush hammering and allied retexturing will continue as normal under national contracts manager, Ged McGhee (MCIHT). Phil Mason has enjoyed a long and influential 45-year career in highways engineering. He has dedicated over 25 years to promoting the wider understanding and adoption of retexturing for restoring skid-resistance and extending the pavement life of roads, runways and race tracks. Phil started his career as a junior engineer with Sir Alfred McAlpine in open-cast coal mining. He then spent 17 years in highways maintenance with Cheshire County Council, progressing to divisional engineer for motorways before joining Klaruw as managing director of its fledgling UK business in the mid 80s. He has been integral to establishing the UK as the leading global user of the KlaruwTex190 (K190) controlled bush hammering process. K190 retexturing has been carried out to almost 20 million square metres of road, runway and race track in the UK, one of the most regulated and quality-driven pavement maintenance markets. A member of the ICE since 1970, Phil also serves on the North Western Branch events committee of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) which honoured him with a Certificate of Merit in March 2011 for services to the Institution. He is on the executive committee of the Road Surface Treatments Association (RSTA) where he has recently contributed to a number of major initiatives including the development of the ADEPT endorsed Retexturing Code of Practice. Phil has been closely involved with the RSTA’s Special Treatments Sector and the Association’ Phil says he is looking forward to a busy retirement, enjoying more free time while continuing his long and happy association with the industry, in particular, acting in a consultancy capacity to Klaruw.
