Local Artist launches online art gallery

ANCHORAGE — Alaskan artist, Robert Thompson has launched an online art gallery, “The Art of Alaska.” Thompson said the site features original art “telling the stories of Alaska through the eyes of Alaskans.”  Thompson has plenty of experience in Alaska; he’s lived here since 1967. In addition to gallery work, he specializes in aviation art and has commissioned work in private collections.

Thompson said, “I think I bring a different perspective to art, especially aviation art. While I've done lots of aviation portraits, the work I do for myself tends to give a different look to the way we use airplanes in Alaska.”

The site also features the artwork of John Hume, a well-known artist specializing in military, aviation, maritime and historical subjects. His clients include aviation museums, private, commercial and military pilots, Air Force units and aerospace corporations across the United States and the Pacific Rim.  

Thompson explained why he launched the site, “There is a keen interest in Alaska aviation art because aviation has played such a crucial role in Alaska’s history, and its fascination continues to this day.” Thompson said he plans to add new artists in the future.
