Follow on Google News | Local Author Lands Publishing Contract after Self-publishing eBookIdaho Springs resident Kathy Lynn Harris is commemorating a happy ending to her 10 year, unconventional journey to book publishing with the paperback release of her novel, Blue Straggler, on March 1, 2012 by 30 Day Books, Seattle, Washington.
By: 30 Day Books Local author and Idaho Springs resident Kathy Lynn Harris struggled for 10 years to sell her women’s fiction manuscript. Although her literary agent pitched her novel to all the major New York publishing houses and it received a lot of interest, the manuscript was ultimately rejected at the last hurdle each time. Frustrated by the continual ups and downs of the pitching process, Harris reevaluated why she wrote Blue Straggler in the first place and made a decision. “I quickly realized that what matters to me most is pretty simple,” she says. “I want readers to enjoy the story and characters, to read a passage and laugh, to read the last page and consider that their time with my story had been time well spent. And I recognized that I didn’t really need to be on a Random House bestseller list to feel good about my work.” Harris chose a different route to sharing her work with readers, embracing the new opportunities afforded by eReaders and digital publishing. In August 2011, Harris published Blue Straggler via Amazon’s Kindle publishing program and Barnes & Noble’s PubIt! platform. The response from readers was positive, reviews on Amazon.com were raving, and Harris was making her own bit of noise on the Internet. So much so that in early 2012 an independent press in Seattle, 30 Day Books, noticed the buzz surrounding Blue Straggler and reached out to express interest in the book. A contract to buy the paperback rights was signed weeks later. Blue Straggler is available in paperback and ebook formats and available through Amazon and in bookstores.
