By: Keytia Ortiz, CCFA Nicolas looks back to what he now says was his most difficult year since being diagnosed, and he and his family are even more dedicated to finding a cure. He created his team, Got Crohn’s? with friends and family in order to raise funds and awareness for this debilitating digestive disease. The 4th annual Miami Take Steps for Crohn’s and Colitis Walk is taking place on Saturday, April 21, 2012 - 4:00 pm at Tropical Park in Miami. The event expects to raise over $115,000 and will be attended by over 750 people. “Nicolas is a great inspiration to the Crohn’s & colitis community,” said Keytia Ortiz, Walk Manager. “Surprisingly, these diseases are not very well known, yet they take a tremendous toll on people’s lives. Like most IBD patients, Nicolas has had a difficult journey. Now that he has found a treatment plan that works for him, he is anxious to share his personal story with anyone affected by these devastating diseases.” Nicolas was selected as the Honored Hero for this year’s Take Steps Walk because he truly exemplifies courage, commitment, and perseverance in the face of adversity. Nicolas knows the struggles and challenges of living with a debilitating, unpredictable digestive disease every day. But that has not stopped him from keeping a positive outlook and persevering in his life and in pursuit of his goals. He is an inspiration to other patients who struggle to come to terms with their disease and a role model for anyone looking to make a difference in the journey to cure digestive diseases. Known collectively as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are painful, medically incurable illnesses that attack the digestive system. Many patients require hospitalization and surgery. One in 200 people suffer from Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, with as many as 150,000 under the age of 18.
