Business processes may cross departmental boundaries and, therefore, may cross network segments. Departmental employees generally work together in an area and that area is usually a single network segment connected to other segments, and therefore other departments, by routers. Larger organizations can have multiple IP subnets for a single location that might house only one department. The point is that business processes are likely to be impacted by the combination of your wireless and wired LANs and WANs. Because these processes are impacted by the performance of the network, you should analyze them to determine how employees use the network. For example, a sales professional enters data into a database related to a sale that a shipper in the shipping department then accesses to deliver the products. The customer service staff will access this data for a follow-up call 48 hours after scheduled delivery to determine if the product arrived at the destination to the customer's satisfaction. This is considered the last step in the sales process. In this process, there are three points of network contact, but understanding what happens before and al ter that network contact tells you if wireless technology can help improve the process. For example, the shipper might be able to ship products faster if he carries a wireless Pocket PC that beeps when a new order needs to be Sales Person Enters the Sale Shipper Processes Order Into the System prepared for shipment. If he currently checks for new shipments once every two hours, adding wireless technology might provide an advantage. It often helps to document the flow of business processes in a way that provides a visual representation of the actual process. You can do this with Visio and other flow diagramming tools. Figure 12.3 shows a business- process flow diagram based on the information in the previous paragraph. You can actually "see" how the business is accomplished and this often triggers ideas for improving that process.
