The GFHIE currently provides electronic coordinated patient care with family practice, pediatrics, neurology, radiology, and chiropractic pilot clinicians managing more than 14,000 patients living in Genesee, Lapeer, and Shiawassee counties.

Long ago, we identified that the biggest challenge physicians were going to have was not implementing a Stage I compliant EHR. The biggest challenge was going to be supplementing an EHR with interfaces to meet Stage II requirements for electronically integrating with all facets of patient care coordination. We were right. Today, the costs to develop, certify, and implement the necessary EHR interfaces to HIEs, pharmacies, laboratories, and state registries, combined with training administrative and clinical staff, is cost prohibitive to the small physician practice.
