CTA Construction Breaks Ground on New Elementary School in Winchester, Mass.

April 4, 2012 - PRLog -- WINCHESTER, Mass.  – Construction of the new 78,000-square-foot Vinson-Owen Elementary School by CTA Construction Co. Inc. is officially underway following the ground-breaking ceremony on April 3rd.

The three-story school, clad with brick, metal and phenolic panels, is being constructed in the same location as its predecessor, which was demolished last fall.  The new elementary school will feature a classroom wing, rooms for art, music and computer lessons, a media center, gymnasium, cafeteria, administrative offices and multiple exterior playground areas.  

The construction cost, $20.6 million, is about $430,000 less than the budget for the project.  The project architect is Tappe Associates of Boston.

The Vinson-Owen project is participating in the Massachusetts Collaborative for High Performance Schools, a program that improves the quality of education by setting standards for the design, construction and operation of new, high-performance schools that are environmentally sustainable, healthy and comfortable.  To meet the criteria, CTA Construction will engage in a number of green-building practices that include recycling 90 percent of the waste from the project, utilizing building materials with recycled content, and installing energy efficient windows as well as HVAC equipment.

In addition to Winchester, CTA recently won the contract to build a new school in Douglas, where it was also the most-competitive, qualified bidder.  CTA’s current projects include Maynard High School, Tewksbury Memorial High School and the Marshall Simonds Middle School in Burlington.  In the past 10 years, CTA has undertaken more than 45 projects valued at over $700 million.
