By: John Brodie, Our Town News The topic of this release is the question, is it true that detoxifying your body is the most important thing you can do for overall good health and even weight loss? Dr. Cajar's Response: Now this is a complicated question. I will answer this question in a two-part article. The second article will discuss the weight loss aspect of detoxification. Each day we let toxins bombard us. Let’s see, there is the car exhaust, cigarette smoke, preservatives in food, insecticides cleaning products, fumes from plastics, lotion, and perfumes and on and on. These toxins didn’t exist 100 years ago. The body has different systems and ways to handle these toxins. When someone talks about detoxification this should mean supporting the organs that eliminate waste and reducing the new toxins from entering the body. So let’s look at the organs that get rid of waste. The main organ that deals with toxins in the body is the liver. The liver performs more than 500 functions in the body and detoxification is one of them. There are two phases in liver detoxification. We will just call them Phase One and Phase Two. In Phase One, the liver prepares the toxic chemicals for elimination by turning them into less harmful chemicals. There are foods that have nutrients that are necessary for this to occur. Foods in the cruciferous family of vegetables are very important to eat. These include kale cabbage broccoli and Brussels sprouts to name a few. It’s important to remember that the liver is always working and these foods should be eaten daily to keep good health. In Phase Two of liver detoxification, the liver takes the waste and prepares it for the kidneys or the bowels. So water and plenty of vegetables and fiber aid this part. Also foods, such as garlic and onions, are very important here. Now there are a lot of “cleanses” Dr. Alfredo Cajar Turtle Run Chiropractic & Wellness Center 6265 W.
