Acclaimed pianist and winner of the 1990 International Chopin Competition, Kevin Kenner makes his AIPF debut in a recital on Thursday, June 21 at 7:30 p.m. that celebrates Debussy's 150th Anniversary and Chopin favorites. Kenner has been praised as "one of the finest American pianists to come along in years" (Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune). Adrian Jack of London's Independent describes one of Kenner's recitals as "...the best performance I have ever heard in the concert hall of all four of Chopin's Ballades." The conductor Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, who recorded with pianists such as Arthur Rubinstein, claimed Kenner's Chopin interpretations to be the most sensitive and beautiful he remembered. Music fans will not want to miss the AIPF Piano Extravaganza on Saturday, June 23 at 7:30 p.m. featuring all Festival guest artists in a light-hearted and entertaining theatrical event, hosted by Honolulu favorite Sara Davis Buechner. The program, which promises a slew of surprises, includes Weber's Invitation to the Dance for 2 pianos/8 hands, Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries for 4 pianos/16 hands, Gershwin's An American in Paris for 2 pianos/4 hands, and The Stars and Stripes Forever for 4 hands/24 hands. On Tuesday, June 19 at 7:30 p.m., AIPF invites the community to an exceptional evening of chamber music featuring celebrated pianist Jon Nakamatsu, violinist Ignace Jang and Sara Davis Buechner. This beautiful program features Mozart's Sonata for Violin and Piano in B flat, K. 454, Mozart's Piano Sonata for Four Hands in C, K. 521 and Dvorak's Piano Quintet in A, Op. 81. Families will also want to save the date for the Father's Day concert on Sunday, June 17 at 2 p.m. Winners of the 2012 Aloha International Piano Competition will treat the audience to an special concert featuring their highlighted works. Students can participate in masterclasses and workshops with Festival faculty including Sara Davis Buechner, John Bayless and Kevin Kenner, while private lessons are available with Festival faculty. The tuition fee includes three private lessons (one hour) with a Festival guest artist, as well as admission to all concerts and recitals, masterclasses and workshops. The competition fee is waived for any Piano Academy student who would also like to participate in the 2012 Aloha International Piano Competition.
