In order to land on the list of Super Lawyers or Rising Stars, an attorney must undergo a vigorous and comprehensive process. Those selected are recognized by their peers for meeting high ethical standards, and for demonstrating a high level of achievement in their field of expertise. Those attorneys who enter the candidate pool for Super Lawyers and Rising Stars are formally nominated by a peer, or they are identified by the research department during the research process.

Once a year, Super Lawyers formally invites attorney from each state to nominate top attorneys who they have personally observed at work. After the nominations have been evaluated, the attorney-led research staff searches for attorneys who have obtained certain honors, credentials and results, all of which are indicators of a high degree of professional competence. These candidates are evaluated based on their professional achievements: verdicts and settlements, experience, honors, awards, special licenses, pro bono and community service as a lawyer and more.

Finally, the final publish list of Super Lawyers represents no more than 5% of the lawyers in a state. Whereas those selected as Rising Stars represent no more than 2.5% of attorneys in the state.
