Immediate Dental Implants Give 91 year old Grandmother Something to Smile About.

Traditional dental implants methods required months of healing between tooth extraction and implant placement. New techniques by Long Island periodontist Dr. David Scharf allow for implant placement and restoration at the time of tooth removal.

April 16, 2012 - PRLog -- Millions of Americans face the prospect of losing one or more of their teeth each year.  For many individuals this means many months of either not having a tooth at all, or wearing a removable denture until the implant is ready to be restored.  New advances in immediate load dental implants pioneered by Long Island periodontist Dr. David Scharf are changing all that.

“Years ago we would remove a tooth, wait 6 months to place the implant and then wait another 3 to 6 months before making  the crown on the implant” says Long Island dental implant expert Dr. Scharf.  “Nowadays with the 3d imaging, better implant designs and a more refined surgical technique, many dental implants can be placed and restored at the same time the tooth is removed.”

The key to immediate implant placement is adequate remaining bone where the tooth is being removed.  This allows for  proper implant stability at the time of placement and a great long term result.  Dr. Scharf was invited to speak in South Korea on this groundbreaking technique at the meeting of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.

Immediate implant placement has many advantages.  Only one surgical procedure is needed instead of two to three. Time, discomfort and cost are reduced.  Removing  the tooth  is usually  the most traumatic part of the procedure.  Once the tooth is out,  placement of the implant is fast and simple when done by a trained practitioner.  “My Grandmother was 91 when I removed 7 of her teeth an inserted 7 implants the same day” says Dr.Scharf.  “Now 8 years later at age 99 she has the comfort and chewing ability that only fixed teeth can bring while her friends in the nursing home struggle with loose, uncomfortable  dentures."

Most people missing teeth are candidates for dental implants.  Modern techniques like cone beam scanners and 3-D planning software take all the guesswork out of implant placement.  Many people are concerned if advanced age disqualifies them from having implants.  "If they are healthy enough to have a tooth removed they are healthy enough to have a dental implant" says Dr. Scharf.

Every year millions of dental implants are placed world wide.  They are usually the preferred method of replacing missing teeth.  The advances in immediate implant placement will only serve to make the option of replacing missing teeth with dental implants on Long Island all the more appealing.   http://www.drscharf.com/dental-implants-long-island-ny/wh...
