ST. CHARLES, MO, April 15, 2012—Recent reports announced that some Missouri Senators are refusing to support a proposal to make Missouri's candidates for governor and lieutenant governor run as a ticket.  It appears these senators recognize the move as a power grab away from Missouri voters.

Mike Carter, candidate for Lieutenant Governor, applauds these Senators for refusing to support a proposal that limits voter rights.  Carter has previously voiced his distrust of anyone who wants to limit the power of voters. "It's not good for the legislature to consciously try and dilute the citizens' votes."

Carter points to the fact that voters have frequently shown their preference for having both parties represented in the gubernatorial roles as proof that such a proposal goes against the wishes of the electorate. "We had Democratic Lt. Governor Carnahan in office with then- Republican Governor Ashcroft, and Republican Lt. Governor Kinder with Democratic Governor Nixon now. Missouri voters do not always feel that having one party in both offices is in the best interests of this state."

Proponents of the plan say that the Governor and Lt. Governor should run together because they will be working together once elected. However, those who are against the plan say that a Governor and Lt. Governor from different parties can balance each other out. Carter asserts that this is a decision that should be left in the voters' hands.
Much the same, Carter says, as term limits should be determined in the voting booth and not by the legislature.  “Co-candidate Lager’s term-limit push appears to me to be a disingenuous attention grab,” said Carter.
