Dragão Porto Excited As Fiesa Begins Work On Sand Sculptures

April 27, 2012 - PRLog -- Dragão Porto heard this week that work is due to start on the International Sand Sculpture Festival (Fiesa) during the final week of April. Around 35,000 tonnes of sand is being shaped into renowned celebrities for this year’s theme, before the festival opens to the public on 25 May. Fiesa is a mega exhibition of sand sculptures held by Prosandart since 2003 in Pêra, with each new edition being dedicated to a different theme. ‘Idols’ is the theme of the 10th Fiesa, paying homage to the various personalities created by our modern day society and to reflect people’s collective admiration of famous people and symbolic objects. “It’s always an incredible spectacle,” said our source at Dragão Porto, a Portugal-based sales and marketing company, “People come from all over to see the sculptures, which can be really breathtaking.”

This year, Fiesa will feature a new structure to the sand sculpture site, allowing visitors a different view of the exhibition, as well as the ability to walk through some of the sculptures. During the first phase of work, a number of technicians will prepare the sand to be shaped by international artists, wetting it, building it into mounds and compacting it according to the ‘scenes’ that are planned. A week later, sculptors from around the world will arrive to transform the sand mounds into famous personalities from the world of sport, film, music, fashion, politics and religion. “Fiesa is considered to be the largest sand sculpture festival in the world, due to the size of the sculptures, which can reach a height of 12 metres, and for the area they occupy, of 15,000 square metres,” said the organisers, adding that the exhibition can be visited both night and day.
