Proof of the Great Gas Mileage on the Hyundai Sonata - Even I was Impressed!

June 1, 2012 - PRLog -- I can’t count how many times I’ve made the trek from Plainfield, IL to the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  If I had to guess, over the course of the 11 years I’ve lived in Illinois, I would have to say probably around 75 or so.  After all, you know how parents are, always wanting to see you, but never wanting to make the drive themselves.

As usual, I packed my luggage in the trunk, put the Green Bay Packers blanket down in the backseat of the Sonata (Yes, that’s right.  Packers!  No matter how long I live in Chicagoland, I will never be a Bear’s fan.) for my puppy and hopped in the driver’s seat to embark on my roughly 400 mile road trip.

Two blocks away from my house in Plainfied, I stopped at the local BP to fill up.  The tank in the 2012 Hyundai Sonata was just about empty.  At $3.69/gallon, it took $59.50 to fill up the tank.  I tried to top it off at $60.00, but realistically, I should have stopped at $59.00.

“Finally,” I thought to myself, “I’m on my way.  Please, let there be no traffic!”

It took a while to get out of Illinois, as it usually does, and by the time I hit Milwaukee, I was already bored.  So, I started playing around with all the gadgets that the Sonata Limited offers.  First, I started streaming music from my Smart Phone via the Bluetooth system.  The Sirius XM/Satellite Radio is nice, but sometime, one just wants to “jam out to their own beat”.  (LOL)

I then decided to check my average fuel economy because the gas gauge didn’t seem to be moving down at all; not that I was complaining.  To my surprise, even with the occasional slow downs and accelerations due to heavy holiday traffic and driving at an average speed of about 70-75 mph (yes, I know I was speeding), I was still averaging 37.2 mpg.  See my actual photo below.  Oh, and by the way, the 2012 Hyundai Sonata is rated for 24 mpg city and 35 mpg highway.

Normally, I stop in Green Bay, Wisconsin to get out, stretch the legs, take the dog for a quick walk and add a few more gallons of gas to the tank.  This trip, though, no stops were made due to the fact I had a broken leg, and well, walking is pretty inconvenient.  The less stops, the better this trip.  Although, Buca, my puppy dog, didn’t seem to thrilled with this fact.

After about another 2.5 hours worth of driving, I pulled in to my parent’s driveway.  I was excited to see everyone, but I think my dog, Buca, was the happiest of all.  Let’s just say greeting everyone wasn’t the first thing on her agenda!

While unpacking the car, well, while my parents were unpacking my car, I took a look at the gas gauges.  Wow!!!!  Only a little over half a tank was used!  Again, I’ve made this trip numerous times. Since I work for Gartner Hyundai, I have driven just about every Hyundai model up to Michigan, and I’ve always had to fill up somewhere along the way, but not this time.  The Hyundai Sonata proved to be one of the most fuel efficient cars that has ever made that voyage with me.
