Software Defined Radio Design Challenge Winners Announced

The Wireless Innovation Forum, a non-profit international industry association dedicated to driving the future of radio communications and systems, announced winners of the 2012 Software Defined Radio Design Challenge, held at Virginia Tech, May 31.
 
June 21, 2012 - PRLog -- The Wireless Innovation Forum (http://www.WirelessInnovation.org), a non-profit international industry association dedicated to driving the future of radio communications and systems worldwide, announced  winners of the 2012 competition, which was held at Virginia Tech on Thursday, May 31, during the annual Wireless @ Virginia Tech Symposium and Wireless Summer School in Blacksburg, VA.

This student contest, sponsored by the Wireless Innovation Forum and Wireless @ Virginia Tech (http://wireless.vt.edu/), initially involved six teams working on a broad range of project topics related to software defined radio.

Ettus Research (http://ettus.com/), Harris (http://www.harris.com/) , and L3 (http://www.l-3com.com/)  provided judges for the event. Criteria for rating the projects included  

•   importance and timeliness of the problem addressed,
•   performance of the solution,
•   flexibility, and
•   ease of use/user interface.

Results of the competition were:

First Place: Gerald Baier and Nico Otterbach, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (http://www.kit.edu/english/), Germany, "Wireless Networks In-the-Loop: Speeding up GNU Radio development," advised by Martin Braun and Jens Elsner

Second Place: Kai Hong and Vidya Sagar, Stevens Institute of Technology (http://www.stevens.edu/sit/), USA, "SpiderRadio: A Programmable Multi-radio Dynamic Spectrum Access Mobile Router," advised by  R. Chandramouli (Mouli) and K.P. (Suba) Subbalakshmi

Third Place:  Matthew Allen and Fei Peng, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (, USA, "Multi-Hop Radio System,” advised by Alex Wyglinskihttp://www.wpi.edu/)
