Hyderabad Real estate businessman Gowri Shankar Gupta got arrested

June 23, 2012 - PRLog -- Prominent real estate businessman Gowri Shankar Gupta, who dodged police in connection with a criminal case filed by construction giant DLF for several weeks, was finally arrested by Central Crime Station (CCS) officials late on Friday night. However, he was arrested in another pending case in which he is charged with cheating Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA).

Gupta was summoned for questioning and subsequently arrested. Soon after he was taken into custody, he complained of chest pain and was admitted to Mediciti. Giving details of the case in which Gupta was arrested, CCS DCP P John Victor said HMDA officials had lodged a complaint alleging that some persons had cheated them by acquiring their land of 25 acres on the pretext of establishing an agricultural hub at a cheap rate at Kukatpally by producing forged letters of DLF Ltd. Believing that the proposal came from DLF authorities, HMDA allotted the 25 acre prime land at a concessional price. But the project did not take off despite the land being allotted several months ago.

HMDA woke up to the fraud after they contacted DLF authorities who told them that the firm floated by Gupta was not their subsidiary and that DLF had neither applied for the land nor it had authorised anyone else on its behalf, police said. During investigation, it came to light that Gupta fabricated documents and frequently changed the addresses.

"Gupta, with the help of his employees, used the name of DLF for obtaining govement land at a concessional rate and kept DLF Ltd in the dark,' John Victor said.

Cases were registered against Gupta under sections 419 (punishment for impersonating) and 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
