International Window Film Association (IWFA) has announced the California Energy Commission placed Window Film, a polymer material providing energy efficiency advantages in the California building code for the first time in the United States.

3M Energy Renewable Films, Sun & Solar Control films, Anti-Graffiti and Surface Protection films, 3M Night Vision films, 3M Security films are available in clear and tinted versions, 3M solar control window films often achieve 2-3 year ROI and are built to last. 3M provides a strong commercial warranty and product lifecycle often exceeds 20 years.

The milestone decision to the building code voted on May 31st and effective January 2014, means window film is recognized in California as a building material just like glass or roofing products mainly for retrofit applications. Window film considerably reduces energy spending while reducing harmful effects of glass breakage, glare, UV exposure and interior fading to furnishings and retail storefront inventory.

“This addition to the code is a major step forward for energy efficiency in California, especially when considering the amount of untreated glass in the state in the majority of buildings,” said Darrell Smith, executive director of the IWFA. “The wide application of window film is a simple way to immediately cut utility demand generation and the resulting reduction of peak demand on utilities and greenhouse gases will further the state’s reputation as an environmental leader,” he added.

New requirements to the California building code include NFRC certification label, 10 yr warranty, manufacturing company and meeting installation IWFA standards. In addition, an IWFA sponsored report showed the application of window film to other energy saving methods across California using the same study methods employed by the California Energy Commission concluded many businesses, consumers and homeowners would achieve significant energy savings using 3M PR-70, even more so on single pane glass.

3M Renewable Energy Films are engineered to reduce infra-red and UV transmission with minimal aesthetic change to existing windows and doors. 3M Renewable Energy window films save help money by reducing building energy demand while improving occupant comfort leading to higher tenant retention.
