Many people buy a security DVR with the idea that later they can just add a bigger hard drive.  But when it comes to professional grade surveillance equipment this is not the case.  Most high quality DVR manufacturers are now warranting their DVR’s up to 3 to 5 years.  But with the warranty they will not allow you to crack open the DVR case to install a larger hard drive.  If you do this the warranty will be invalid.  Which makes sense, they are not going to give long term warranties on equipment that people can just open up and alter components.

The key to success is to plan.  Understand the amount of video you want to save and buy the DVR with the hard drive size that will best support it.  The cost of hard drives in general is very reasonable.  So it is best add extra storage when it comes time to choose your DVR.
