Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum - Balaji's First Of Four Planned Sequels
Nets Rs. 23 Crores at the Indian Box Office In Its Opening Weekend

Film recoups 50% over landed cost, Highest Ramzan weekend opening ever

Mumbai, New Delhi, August 3, 2012: Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum (KSKHH), a Bollywood comedy film produced by Balaji Motion Pictures’ Alt Entertainment banner, has garnered an unprecedented Rs. 23 crores (net box office collections) in its opening weekend in Indian theatres, bucking the trend during the month of Ramadan when collections are usually lukewarm. The film already recouped 50% over its landed cost through controlled pricing and aggressive marketing even before its release. Its box office performance is more than that of films released earlier this year with a bigger star cast and made on substantially higher budgets.

KSKHH is a reflection of the strong buy-in of audiences into the sequel model. This is a well-accepted trend in Hollywood, with movie franchises like Harry Potter, Batman, Transformers, Avengers, Cars, Pirates of the Caribbean, to name a few, enjoying excellent box office collections. Sequels and movie series is a category that Balaji Motion Pictures proposes to pursue wherever it deems appropriate.

Prior to KSKHH’s release on July 27, Balaji had pre-sold domestic distribution, music and satellite rights in excess of Rs. 30 crores. This is in line with the company’s de-risking strategy.

KSKHH, a sequel to the successful 2005 original, has been written and directed by Sachin Yardi and stars Tusshar and Riteish Deshmukh, among an ensemble of Bollywood’s well-established comic actors.

According to Tanuj Garg, CEO - Balaji Motion Pictures, “KSKHH, a sequel to Kyaa Kool Hain Hum, is our first of four sequels. Its robust box office performance re-endorses our ability to connect with our target audience through strategic planning and marketing. We are delighted to be the only studio with a 100% track record at the box office in the form of a seventh consecutive hit.”

With KSKHH taking a superlative opening at the box office, additional Balaji sequels to follow in 2013 include Shootout At Wadala (a prequel to Shootout At Lokhandwala), Ragini MMS 2 and Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai...Again.
