Premiato Pastificio Afeltra Joins the Portfolio of Italian Gourmet Pasta Offered by Po Valley Foods

Since 1848, Premiato Pastificio del Cavalier Olimpio Afeltra has produced bronze-drawn pasta in the city synonymous with the art of pasta making: Gragnano. Located 20 km south of Naples, in the region of Campania, the state of the art, three-story factory stands at the very same location it has since the mid 1800’s.

Visitors to the Monti Lattari countryside outside of Naples in the late 1800's, would marvel at the site of streets and balconies lined with drying rods of freshly made pasta. In Gragnano's 'Via Roma' the Amalfi coastal breezes in the daytime, the cooler, dry Lattari mountain breezes at night and the slight humidity in the air, made ideal conditions for undoubtedly the most important factor in pasta-making; the slow and gradual drying process.

Premiato Pastificio AFELTRA is recognized the world over for their excellence in pasta making. Widely believed to have created the first “maccheroni”, today Premiato Pastificio Afeltra produces dozens of cuts. Some unique to Gragnano are Paccheri (long tubes), Lumaconi (large snails), Calamarato (rings shaped like calamari) and Vesuvio, which is one of most original specialty cuts from Gragnano, inspired by the volcano. Tradition endures in their Fusilli Bucati which is still made by hand.
