There is no absolute way to predict the winner when two teams collide on the field. Things like weather, injuries and poor officiating can easily turn the tide.

But, careful research and examination of how a team is doing and what they are doing can put a handicapper into the winning column more often than not.

At The Winning Wagers, Joey Cassano and Mike Giabardi are running 70 percent for picking the winner in a contest of two NCAA football teams.

“It’s not quite rocket science, but neither is it looking into a crystal ball and pulling predictions out of the air,” expert handicapper Mr. Cassano said. “Mike and I spend a lot of time reviewing games on TV and the computer. We carefully study player stats. We look at how a team has fared against a similar team.”

The men pull this information together and - this is what makes their work closer to rocket science - they crunch the numbers to make a prediction. This research is what allows them to pick winners more often than not, especially in the SEC football conference.

They also look at how long a player has had to recover from an injury. A player just back in the lineup and on the field is a question mark. Mr. Cassano and Mr. Giabardi find other players who suffered similar injuries and had similar pre-injury play. That lets them make a pretty solid estimate of how that person is going to perform.

Part of the handicapping for college football lines simply can’t be put down on paper and analyzed with a computer.

“Some things can’t be quantified as straight numbers,” Mr. Cassano said. “Things like heart, drive and determination, that’s stuff you see on the field. While it usually does result in great stats, it doesn’t have to. But, that’s still part of the equation.”

Homecoming, he said, is great example of this. When a college team schedules its homecoming football game, the players are going to have added incentive to win. Mr. Cassano said they will work just a bit harder than in the other regular season games. That’s factored into the decisions they give to people making football wagers.

In the end, it all comes down to the percentage of correct picks. Handicappers who know their craft will be on the winning side more often than not. The margin of a win is equally important.

“If you don’t make money, we don’t make money,” Mr. Cassano said. “We have to stay high on the win side of the column. Our research and dedication to NCAA football keeps us there. That keeps you in the winning column when you place your bets.”
