Sept. 12, 2012 - PRLog -- Philadelphia, PA:  Human beings have been finding ways of helping each other for thousands of years.  In the past 150 years we have developed safe and effective approaches to helping people who are going through hard times.  From the hypnotherapy of Charcot through the talk therapy of Freud, the analytic psychology of  Carl Jung, the interpersonal psychology of Alfred Adler, the Gestalt therapy of Frederick Perls, the family therapy of Salvador Minuchin and Virginia Satir, the group therapy of Irving Yalom and Lou Ormont, the cognitive-behavioral approaches of Aaron Beck and Albert Ellis, the recent advances of Finland’s Jakko Seikkula in treating people diagnosed with schizophrenia we have been finding ways of helping people who are diagnosed with mental disorders.

The 2012 conference of the International Society for Ethical Psychology and Psychiatry is a way to learn about, explore and celebrate new approaches that are safe, humane and life-enhancing.  Among our headline speakers are two Philadelphia psychiatrists who have been part of that healing movement for many years: Elio Frattaroli and Salman Akhtar.

Dr. Frattaroli is the author of Healing the Soul in the Age of the Brain.  In the book he describes a psychotherapeutic model which “understands mental illness not only in neurological but also in personal terms, as an inner emotional conflict – a disharmony of body, brain, mind and spirit – that is intrinsic to the human condition.”  He describes how the “conflict is resolved and the symptom disappears when we can consciously feel and accept as part of ourselves the unsettling emotion that is generating the symptom.”   Dr. Frattaroli will be speaking on the afternoon of Friday, November 2.

Dr. Akhtar is the author of Quest for Answers, Objects of Desire, The Damaged Core and other books.  He is Professor of Psychiatry at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.  He is described as “one of the most dynamic speakers I have heard who is excited about the 2012 ISEPP conference.”  Dr. Akhtar will be speaking on Friday morning, November 2.

The conference which is entitled Alternatives to Biological Psychiatry: Treatments That Work is scheduled for November 2 and 3 at the Philadelphia Airport Marriott Hotel.  For more information and to register you may go to www.psychintegrity.org or www.Isepp.info or call Al Galves at 575-522-8371.
