Sept. 13, 2012 - PRLog -- CLEVELAND, OHIO – www.mbma.com:  The Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA) announces the release of the Metal Roofing Systems Design Manual - Second Edition. The new edition updates this important industry guide to current standards and codes, which includes the 2012 International Building Code (IBC) and the American Society of Civil Engineers/Structural Engineering Institute (ASCE 7-10). It also incorporates the results of research undertaken by MBMA, its members, and other industry groups and comes with a separate searchable CD-Rom feature that includes AutoCAD roofing details.

“This updated guide is an invaluable resource for anyone who works with metal roofs,” says MBMA chairman Fred Koetting. “It provides the most complete information on metal roofs that is currently available and is an excellent reference source. There is practical and detailed material on common industry practices, substrates, fastener types, climate data, and ASTM standards related to metal roofing.”

MBMA’s Director of Architectural Services, Jay D. Johnson, LEED AP, oversaw the research efforts to update this industry standard.  He notes that “metal roofs are popular just about everywhere, and not just on metal buildings. Because of the their popularity, this manual is a good resource for architects, engineers, manufacturers, specifiers, builders, and anyone interested in metal roofing.”

The Metal Roofing Systems Design Manual has 12 chapters. It begins by introducing roofing system components, substrates, and specifications and standards for metal roofs before moving on to retrofit roofs, common industry practices, design practices, and a chapter detailing installation and maintenance. The climatological data includes ground snow, wind, seismic, and rain loads updated to the current information available from ASCE 7-10 and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The manual concludes with metal roofing details and drawings for various applications, such as retrofits and new construction, for both low and high sloped roofs.

MBMA has served metal building systems manufacturers and suppliers since 1956. Its membership represents more than $1.9 billion in annual steel shipments and accounts for approximately 50% of the total non-residential low-rise construction market in the United States. MBMA provides engineering leadership through the many research programs that it sponsors annually, often in coordination with major universities and engineering schools throughout North America. This research is used to improve the performance, efficiency, and quality of metal building systems and to elevate the technology used to produce them.
