Scott Weinerth Announces Master of Science, Geriatric Nurse Practitioner Degree

Sept. 18, 2012 - PRLog -- As a registered nurse, Scott Weinerth has helped a large number of patients get the care and attention that they deserve, each and every day. While he's been caring for patients during the day, he's been heading to school at night in order to advance his education and enter a slightly different field in the nursing arena. Scott Weinerth is proud to announce that he has completed his Master of Science in Geriatric Nursing degree, allowing him to work as a geriatric nurse practitioner.

Working in this field can be challenging, and it's not for the faint of heart, says Scott Weinerth. Many people who need the help of a geriatric nurse practitioner are quite sick, and they may have complex problems that require quick thinking.

"Geriatric patients may face cascading problems that involve multiple body systems," says Scott Weinerth. "For example, a patient who has a heart condition may experience dizziness, and that dizzy spell could cause a fall and a broken hip. Working in gerontology often means paying attention to how problems can compound one another in this way."

In his courses, Scott Weinerth was asked to learn about common medical conditions that could impact the elderly, and he was asked to learn more about medications that are commonly prescribed to people who are older.

"Some medications cause terrible side effects in older people," says Scott Weinerth. "It's important to know what the side effects commonly are, so I can ask my patients if they are experiencing problems that are related to the drugs they take. These patients may not even know that they're experiencing a side effect (as opposed to a general sign of aging) unless I ask them. It's a vital piece of the geriatric nursing puzzle."
