Charleston Lady Atheist awarded Carolinas Freethinker of the Year 2012

Amy Monsky, President of the Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry and Camp Director of Quest, SC has been chosen to receive the Carolinas Freethinker of the Year award at the Carolinas Secular Conference in Charleston, 28th to 30th September 2012.

Sept. 18, 2012 - PRLog -- Each year at the Carolinas Secular Conference, a regional event uniting atheists, humanists, Freethinkers and activists in the secular community, an award is presented to recognize an outstanding individual who has worked tirelessly for the region. The award recognizes personal contribution in building the Freethought community, raising awareness of Secular issues, and working to help the entire region, regardless of religion, thereby openly demonstrating the positive role non-theists play in society.
A mother of three and resident if Summerville, SC, Amy Monsky has been heavily involved in the Freethought community since 2008. In addition to the Presidency of The Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry, Amy founded the Secular Humanist Families of Charleston, the state’s first secular parenting support group. She continues to spearhead many initiatives that benefit the entire community, such as captaining the Charleston “Light The Night” team, raising money to fight Leukemia.
Of particular note, gaining widespread praise, Amy founded and is the Chair and Camp Director of Camp Quest South Carolina, a fun Secular Camp program for youth from both North and South Carolina as well as from Georgia. The first camp Quest SC event attracted over 100 participants, making it the largest event in the history of the Camp Quest international program. Amy has also taken a key position on the national Camp Quest board.
In 2012, Amy has been pivotal in organizing the Carolinas Secular Association, and helping to build many new Freethinking groups across the state. She has served as a true and powerful inspiration to the Secular community and beyond and announcement of this award has met with strong unanimous approval far and wide.
Amy will be presented with the Freethinker of the Year award at the Carolinas Freethinkers Banquet, which takes place at from 7PM to 11PM on Saturday September 29th in the Charleston Marriott ballroom.
