Sept. 25, 2012 - PRLog -- In June 2012, SGS was awarded a contract by Australian MacMahon to provide complex pavement engineering services for an asphalt beam recovery project in Perth. During the project, scheduled for the six weeks from the middle of June until the end of July, SGS conducted pavement and sub-grade testing investigations.

MacMahon, headquartered in Perth, is a leading Australian contract mining and construction company with operations throughout Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Mongolia and Africa. In order to ensure a quality completion of the roadworks in Perth, Macmahon sought a trusted and experienced partner for independent testing and certification. Due to the extensive experience and expertise in this area and a successful past cooperation, SGS was once again the clear choice to partner in this particular project.

SGS was entrusted to examine pavement and sub-grade testing, test construction material and perform geotechnical investigation (http://www.sgs.com/en/Construction/Project-Management/Services-During-Design/Geotechnical-Services.aspx) for the Macmahon Perth asphalt beam recovery project, the second of its kind in all of Australia.

SGS Pavement Engineering Services for MacMahon

In order to ensure the quality and sustainability of the pavement systems, SGS conducted investigation of pavement and sub-grade testing services. Based on the extensive experience and competence in projects of this kind, SGS carried out testing of construction materials (http://www.sgs.com/en/Construction/Services-Related-to-Ma...) including soils, rocks, concrete to guarantee quality and avoid costly repercussions of implementing substandard construction components. Furthermore, SGS geotechnical specialists analyzed soil, aggregates and subgrade material properties.

Throughout the entire duration of the project, highly-skilled SGS professionals used deflectometer laser profiling (DMLP), applying 3-D laser sensors to analyze pavement profiles by measuring surface roughness, texture and rutting at speeds and determine pavement compliance with international standards. Moreover, SGS engineers used falling weight deflectometer (FWD) technology to evaluate the physical properties of the Perth project pavement. FWD allowed SGS to measure the capability of the pavement to tolerate expected loads by measuring the vertical deflection response of the surface to an impulse load. SGS utilized deflection sensors to measure pulse waves in order to determine the strength of the surface material.

In addition, in the SGS testing of the Perth pavement was used the South African deflectometer cone penetrometer (SADCP) to estimate the bearing capacity and modulus of compacted materials. The team of SGS experts also analyzed pavement samples, classified asphalt and tested aggregate strength.
