Sept. 28, 2012 - PRLog -- WineClubGuide.com investigates a new study reveals that daily consumption of non-alcoholic red wine may be useful in the prevention of low to moderate hypertension by decreasing a person’s systolic blood pressure.

The study, which took place in Spain, observed 67 men between the ages of 55 and 80 with diabetes or other cardiovascular risk factors. Each subject was asked to drink 10 ounces of non-alcoholic red wine, 3 ounces of gin or 10 ounces of red wine daily. Each subject drank each type of liquid for a four-week period. Test results taken during periods the subject drank the non-alcoholic red wine showed a six point average decrease in the subject's systolic blood pressure readings, which translates into a reduction in heart disease risk by 14 percent and a reduction in stroke risk up to 20 percent, as stated by the researchers. A smaller reduction in blood pressure was found after the red wine was used, and none with the gin.

The researchers also found that the subject’s plasma nitric oxide levels increased during the time they drank non-alcoholic red wine. Nitric oxide allows blood vessel walls to relax, which creates better blood flow through the vessels. The nitric oxide levels increased slightly when the men drank regular red wine, and there was no increase with the gin.

Recent medical studies have touted red wine as being good for the heart because of high antioxidant levels. The antioxidant polyphenol may help prevent heart disease by protecting arteries and increasing the levels of good cholesterol. This new study suggests that people could reap the pulmonary benefits that red wine provides, but without the alcohol. A red wine club that offers non-alcoholic wine choices to consumers would help take the mystery out of finding premium non-alcoholic red wines.
