Colorado Mountain Club Celebrates Centennial with Open House

Leading Outdoor Organization Hosts Clinics, Expo and Speaking Events in Colorado Springs

Oct. 1, 2012 - PRLog -- In celebration of the organizations 100th birthday, the Colorado Mountain Club (CMC) is hosting an open house, outdoor expo, and speaking events open to the public Saturday, October 20 2012 at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center (FAC).

“Our Centennial Open House and Volunteer Appreciation Party is a way to showcase all the CMC has to offer as well as pay tribute to the 3,000 dedicated volunteers of the organization” said CMC CEO Katie Blackett.  “We hope to have many members travel to the Fine Arts Center in the Springs to help us celebrate our 100th anniversary, but also we hope for local participation as well.”

CMC members and non-members are invited to participate in one of several workshops scheduled throughout the day, including a speaking event 12,000 Feet Above Pikes Peak:  Climbing an 8,000 Meter Mountain by Mike Teger from 9 AM to 3 PM. Lunch will be provided by Natural Grocers and drinks by O'dell's Brewing company.  Members and nonmembers interested in participating in the event can register at www.cmc.org/centennial.  General admission to the party is $22 and closes Thursday, October 18th. Advance registration is encouraged. All registrants receive tickets for over $1000 in door prize drawings.

The Centennial Open House and Volunteer Appreciation Party is part of the Colorado Mountain Club’s Kaiser Permanente Centennial Celebration series celebrating the club’s 100 years of backcountry conservation, education and adventure.  The club was founded by two dozen backcountry recreationalists in April of 1912, and today it has over 7,000 members. The organization played an instrumental role in the creation of Rocky Mountain National Park. Additionally, through its courses, it has helped tens of thousands learn how to enjoy the backcountry safely; its members organize and lead approximately 3,000 backcountry trips in Colorado, around the Rockies, and throughout the world every year.
