Oct. 2, 2012 - PRLog -- Bedbugs are small, elusive, and wingless parasitic insects that feed on warm blooded animals: birds, bats, you. They can't fly but they can crawl fast.

They are about the size of a grain of rice when full-grown and almost indiscernible at younger stages. The newly hatched are the size of a poppy seed -- but if you look closely, you can see bugs, nymphs & eggs with your naked eye.

They are oval when looking at them from the top-down but are pretty flat when viewing them from the side. Their flatness allows them easily hide.

Because they come out for very short periods [to snack on you], they are hard to catch in action, and they are quick to get out of sight.

PGS eradicates bedbugs without pesticides.

It is a MYTH that Bed bugs live in dirty places. In fact, bed bugs are not attracted to dirt and grime; they are attracted to warmth, blood and carbon dioxide. That means you can find them any place you find humans: from luxurious 5th Avenue apartments to skid row.

Other popular myths:

* Myth: You can’t see a bed bug.
Reality: You can see adult bed bugs, nymphs and eggs with your naked eye.

* Myth: Bed bugs transmit diseases.
Reality: There have been no cases or studies that indicate bed bugs pass diseases from one host to another.

* Myth: Bed bugs won’t come out if the room is brightly lit.
Reality: While bed bugs prefer darkness, keeping the light on at night won’t deter these pests from biting you -- when they're hungry and sense food nearby, they'll come out and get you.

* Myth: Bedbugs live exclusively in mattresses & bite only at night
Reality: 'Bedbug' is a misnomer. Bedbugs spread away from beds into living areas and can be seen on any surface, including chairs, railings and ceilings. A better name is pet bug (they can travel on pets!) or suitcase bug.

* Myth: Pesticide applications will exterminate bed bug infestations.
Reality: Proper use of pesticides may help control bed bugs, but will not by itself eliminate bed bugs. In addition, bed bug populations in different areas of the country have developed resistance to pesticides. If you're dealing with a resistant population, some products and application methods may only make the problem worse. Plus, many people get sick with pesticide-use and pesticides must be sprayed on everything (they only work by coming into contact with bedbugs).

* Myth: We should bring back DDT
Reality: When the controversial pesticide DDT was banned in 1972, most bed bugs were already resistant to it; today, bedbugs are even more resistant to pesticides. Pyrethroids, the main class of pesticides used against bedbugs today, targets sodium channels in bedbug cells, just like DDT. Consequently, as bedbugs develop resistance to pyrethroids, they also become cross-resistant to DDT.
