Oct. 3, 2012 - PRLog -- WILLISTON, VT (Oct. 3, 2012) – Julbo’s extensive heritage in optical lens technology, combined with the reputable wisdom of freeskiing legend Glen Plake, set snowsport-industry standards when it comes to freeride goggle innovation. Since February 2012, Julbo and Glen Plake have been on the lookout for talented skiers and riders to carry brand’s momentum as ambassadors via enrollment in the Julbo Glen University Session (JGUS). Tapping into the core of ski mountaineering, Julbo has teamed with Teton Gravity Research to host the October Julbo USA Chamonix Challenge as part of the JGUS contest.

The TGR-hosted contest requires contestants to show the best line they have skied or plan to ski this season. Running through the month of October, the contest app is straightforward and allows each entrant to use multiple mediums such as a word essay, video, photos or all of the above to prove they have what it takes to ski with Glen in Chamonix in March 2013. The contest will also be available on Julbousa.com and the Julbo USA Facebook page.

Considering Glen’s recent life-changing experience in Nepal and surviving the Manaslu avalanche tragedy that took the lives of Glen’s expedition partners, Julbo extends its deepest condolences to the mountaineer community, and more than ever encourages safe backcountry travel.

“While Julbo identifies Glen as an expert skier who practices safe protocol and he was on a supported expedition, this disaster reinforced the unrivaled power of Mother Nature,” said Nick Yardley, CEO of Julbo USA. “Julbo requests all backcountry skiers and JGUS participants to make safe decisions and does not encourage contestants to attempt any life threatening feats for contest submissions.”

JGUS was designed to discover the next generation of Julbo’s semi-professional ski and snowboarding athletes under the mentorship of “Professor” Glen Plake. Registered contestants (scholars) must complete a majority of the contests hosted on julbousa.com. Graduation of the two performing students will take place in Julbo’s homeland of Chamonix, France in March 2013 with part-time local resident, Plake himself, as the head guide. To get to Chamonix, the final exam will require the two finalists to come to Denver, before Julbo’s inaugural exhibition at the SIA tradeshow, for a backcountry tour evaluation with professor Glen Plake.

“Due to the vast development of outdoor equipment in recent years, a more natural skiing experience has been made accessible to many more people,” said Plake.” Now, more than ever before, I have to believe there is a new generation of ski mountaineers developing. Julbo wants to give them the opportunities that they may be looking for and deserve.”

Plake, an international ambassador for Julbo since 2009, is significantly involved with the product development of the Julbo goggle line, including the special edition Glenak goggle, which he designed with fellow European freerider, Enak Gavaggio. Plake was inducted into the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame for all his dedication, passion and contribution to the sport of skiing. The man behind the colorful mohawk is looking forward to sharing his enthusiasm for Julbo and all things skiing to the scholars of JGUS.

“Julbo is an established traditional outdoor brand, with a true mountain culture,” said Plake. “The Julbo Glen University Session is an authentic manifestation of Julbo’s dedication to sustaining this culture by supporting young talent and the pursuit of their outdoor dreams.”
