Belzona recommended the application of a high performance barrier coating to seal the steps. Belzona 5811 (Immersion Grade), a two component epoxy system which is commonly used to protect surfaces operating under immersion, was applied to the steps and up the adjacent walls to provide total encapsulation of the concrete substrate. In addition to repairing the steps, the college requested that Belzona apply an anti-slip system to the steps. Belzona 4411 (Granogrip), a safety grip system was chosen as it provides a three component system consisting of a brightly coloured base, a liquid solidifier and an aluminum oxide aggregate. This system provides a durable, non-slip surface with excellent adhesion, wear and chemical resistance. This application can be conducted in two different ways. The aggregate can either be incorporated within the mixed product which enables it to be cleaned easily or alternatively as in this case, the aggregate can be sprinkled onto the applied, un-cured product post application. Scattering the aggregate on top of the already applied product ensures maximum grip. Firstly, the cured 5811 (Immersion Grade) on the nosing’s of the step, was prepared and then wetted out with Belzona 4411 (Granogrip) with the correct thickness of product being achieved. The chosen Belzona aluminium oxide aggregate was then sprinkled onto the un- cured product on the steps. Overall the application was found to be a success and the school used the Belzona 4411 (Granogrip) system for other steps to provide non- slip surfaces. End
