Business Health Services Welcomes Visiting Scholar Dr. Zhanbiao Shi

BHS’ Employee Assistance Program Serves as Model for Community Mental Health Initiatives in China

Oct. 26, 2012 - PRLog -- BALTIMORE, MARYLAND – Business Health Services (BHS) this week was honored to host Dr. Zhanbiao Shi, Director of the Center for Mental Health Promotion at the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IPCAS) located in Beijing, China. The purpose of the visit was to learn more about the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) services BHS provides and to discuss how elements of BHS’ programs can be used to improve community mental health throughout China. Dr. Shi was accompanied by Ms. Wei Gao, Consultant Manager for the Center for Mental Health Promotion, IPCAS, as well as a translator.

Dr. Shi and his team met with Michal Moffitt, BHS’ EAP Provider Relations Supervisor to outline a model of BHS’ EAP program to use as the benchmark for promoting and expanding EAP and wellness initiatives in China. According to Dr. Shi, there are only two major companies in the country that supply the same types of services, but to a lesser degree. His goal is to promote these types of programs to increase overall wellness among the general public.

“It was an honor and a privilege to host Dr. Shi and Ms. Gao as our guests. The opportunity to share BHS’ knowledge and experience in a way that can improve the lives of other people living and working on the opposite side of the globe – that’s powerful,” stated Michal Moffitt, BHS EAP Provider Relations Supervisor.

Dr. Shi showed particular interest in BHS’ comprehensive approach to EAP programs, which focuses on the overlap between mental and physical health. He informed Ms. Moffitt that in China, it is customary for employers to require new employees to complete a health screening for awareness purposes only. He expressed interest in using this type of data, along with BHS’ comprehensive approach, to promote the improvement of physical health while promoting mental health initiatives in communities across China.

In meeting with Ms. Moffitt, Dr. Shi also examined the logistics of BHS’ EAP programs, expressing a strong positive regard for the Masters-level education of all BHS Care Coordinators, the workings of BHS’ in-house marketing team and how technology is used to improve BHS’ EAP services on an ongoing basis.

“We are hopeful that this meeting signifies the start of a wonderful partnership - one that will certainly benefit both sides,” stated Ms. Moffitt, “We look forward to working with Dr. Shi and his team in the future.”
