A 21st century alternative to funeral flowers

As more and more people are choosing to celebrate the life of their loved ones at their funeral, rather than hold a more traditional service, mourners can now take advantage of the digital age to create a lasting tribute for generations to come.

Nov. 2, 2012 - PRLog -- A Giving Tribute (www.agivingtribute.com)  is a new website developed by businesswoman Liz Mowatt, who came up with the idea when her best friend’s son was tragically killed in a car accident. She said: “His funeral had hundreds of floral tributes which looked beautiful, but of course they ended up being thrown away. I then attended the funeral of a friend who died quite quickly of cancer. His funeral was very bleak as people had donated, at the request of his wife, to the hospice that provided his care. There was nothing to see and nothing for his wife and family to keep.”

Prompted by these two extremely sad occasions, Liz was inspired to develop the online service which offers a lasting alternative to funeral flowers. People can create their own personal message, with photos, which are then printed by the company and forwarded to a funeral director. Mounted onto a specially designed display, the memories will be delivered to where the funeral is being held.  Liz explains: “These personal tributes and photographs can help everyone at the service to remember special moments and celebrate the life of the person who has died, rather than grieve their loss.”

The tributes can then be taken to the farewell reception and afterwards taken home by the family to put into a ‘book of memories’, providing a more long-lasting alternative to flowers.

With the website creating a single-point of reference for directions, timings and any other important information, grieving friends and family can avoid awkward and emotional conversations with well wishers. Charities can also be chosen, to which mourners can donate directly.

A Giving Tribute has been endorsed by entrepreneur James Caan of Dragon’s Den fame and a founder of The Entrepreneurs’ Business Academy.  He said: “A Giving Tribute is a superb idea. The passing of a loved one, friend or colleague is always a distressing time. I feel Liz’s concept will help people manage their loss in a proactive way.”
