Customizabooks Releases “Yesterday We Had a Hurricane” To Help After Superstorm Sandy

Nov. 14, 2012 - PRLog -- (Albuquerque, NM – November 14, 2012) – Customizabooks LLC today announced the launch of Yesterday We Had A Hurricane, a children’s bilingual book app for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch that re-tells the experience of a hurricane as seen through the eyes of a child.

Written and designed to help young readers process their experiences with storms, the story explains the characteristics of hurricanes and the effects of wind and rain. The book goes beyond informational text to offer some lighthearted and practical ways to make do without electricity.

Award-winning author / illustrator Deirdre McLaughlin Mercier brings a deft touch and a deep understanding of her readers to the tale. Her colorful collage illustrations make hurricanes non-threatening and bring them down to "child size"--making this book a wonderful resource for parents and schoolteachers.

“Hurricanes are scary,” says Deidre. “I wanted to give adults a way to help children discuss their feelings about these oftentimes frightening events.”

Thousands of parents and teachers have used the printed version of the book to explain hurricanes to children. The book has earned the prestigious Mom’s Choice Award and the Teacher’s Choice Award, and it has been featured on C-SPAN and The Discovery Channel.

In its first collaboration with Bumble Bee Productions, Customizabooks has developed a digital version of the book that allows readers to read the book on a tablet; find interactive touchable objects and animations on every page; and to read the story in both English and Spanish text.

“We were nearly finished converting the book into a digital book app when Hurricane Sandy grew into a dangerous storm,” said Tom Anderson, co-founder of Customizabooks.  “We hurried to finalize the book given the recent storm events to get it out as a tool to help address children's fears and concerns over hurricanes. It is a great tool to use with children after the storm, as each page gives room for discussion about concepts that may be on their minds.”

Customizabooks and Bumble Bee Productions will be donating half of what they collect on each sale this year to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to help victims of Hurricane Sandy throughout the country.
