As in all treatments or medicines, we must firstly look at when not to use it, although it has to be stated, this is a very safe medicine. If there has been a past sensitivity to ibuprofen or aspirin products in the past. The patient is allergic to any of the ingredients in the gel. There is broken or damaged skin urticaria asthma kidney problems peptic ulcer It should not be used for children under 12. In my own practice, we use this gel for both home use to reduce inflammation inbetween treatments, and as a gel for application with ultrasound. This has the benefit of literally pushing the ingredients to where we want them. This use of NSAIDS with ultrasound is not a new idea. Physical therapists used to crush aspirin into ultrasound coupling gel to get the same effects. The gel works by inhibiting many chemicals that contribute to inflammation and tenderness and therefore can be useful in healing. I should add that like all topical gels, it is really only effective for injuries close to the bodys surface. The use of anti inflammatory gels with ultrasound is an area that can be extremely useful to osteopaths, chiropractors and physical therapists, but with the advent of "quick fix" methods, ultrasound has fallen out of favour. This is sad, as ultrasound is a quite incredible tool when used correctly. Maybe its time to retrieve that ultrasound machine from the cupboard, blow off the dust, and get it working again??
