Noted Speaker and Best Selling Author Devin C. Hughes to Speak at TEDxVillageGate: “Let It Be Me"

Nov. 26, 2012 - PRLog -- Carlsbad, CA. (November 26, 2012) – TedxVillageGate today announced that Devin C. Hughes will speak at the TEDx event in Encinitas, CA. TEDxVillageGate is being organized by Village Gate Children’s Academy -- an innovative Montessori school for children grades K-7 in Encinitas, north of San Diego -- and will be held near the school on Dec. 8, 2012.  

Our TEDxVillageGate theme -- “Let It Be Me” -- is inspired by the school’s mission to educate children as creative thinkers, problem-solvers and contributing community members. It is a call to personal and community action, as we teach our students: rather than waiting for an unknown “them” to fix things and create a better world, we must rise to the knowledge that “them” is “me.

The conference will include four thematic sessions:

•   Changing the Face of Education
•   Creating Momentum Through Innovation
•   Making Connections to Build Community
•   Hailing the Heroes of Tomorrow (which will feature youth speakers)

Like many people, Devin C. Hughes knows what it is like to not belong. Raised by a white mother and a black father, Hughes spent much of his childhood and young adult life trying to figure out where he fit in. Adding to the confusion, Hughes' parents had their own problems. His mother was a drug addict, his father, an alcoholic. Hughes was a gifted student, yet he struggled with dyslexia. His life was often a study of contradiction.  Although Hughes spent many of his adult years not acknowledging his mixed race background, he began to realize that by speaking of his own confusion, he could be a catalyst for change.

By speaking at this year’s event, Hughes said, he hopes to provide a bridge-a conduit to help people who are trying to connect and find a place where they belong. "You can find a way or find an excuse, and I hope my talk helps you find a way," he said.
