Former Mayor Sam Adams Weighs In: Indian Dance Parties Get Rave Reviews

India has been infiltrating Portland’s cultural landscape as monthly Bollywood and Bhangra dance parties gain in popularity with upwards of 500 people at each event. Even former Mayor Sam Adams leapt on the bandwagon when the rock star of this cultural movement, Bollywood DJ Prashant Kakad, was featured at his official going away party on December 7th 2012.

Kakad used to joke about getting the chance to teach Sam Adams how to dance. No longer. “He came up to me two or three times during my set just to tell me what a great job I was doing!” said Kakad, adding that Adams called him the “best culturist in Portland.”

Kakad strives to bring his passion for Indian dance and music to all ages and groups—with dance lessons, dance performances and live singing at every event, he engages the crowd and gets them on the floor. He formed Bollywood Dreams Entertainment, LLC three years ago when he stepped away from his lucrative career as an engineer with Intel. Despite being raised in Mumbai, India on “40 Bollywood movies before six months of age,” Kakad’s love of Indian song and dance came later in life—after he began studying for a master’s degree in chemical engineering at Cornell University.

Bollywood Dream Entertainment’s big success is Jai Ho!, a monthly Bollywood and Bhangra dance party that takes place on the last Saturday of every month and features artists straight from India as well as local and touring artists from around the world. Theme-driven, every month it has a distinct vibe. To get party-goers pumped for Jai Ho!, Kakad releases a video complete with dance instructions on his website two weeks before each event. Flash dance mobs are encouraged.

Kakad also hosts a one-hour live radio show, Bollywood Mixtape, every week on 107.1 FM, puts on monthly Jai Ho! dance parties in Seattle and occasionally in L.A. and teaches weekly dance classes out of StudioNia (mailto:http://www.nianow.com/studionia).

Jai Ho! celebrates its third year on Saturday, January 26th at Holocene (mailto:http://www.holocene.org/) in Portland featuring DJ RDX (Seattle), VJ Brett Bell, and the band Free Beat Nation (mailto:https://www.facebook.com/pages/Free-Beat-Nation/28...) as well as a set and live dance lessons by the vanguard Prashant Kakad.

This will also be the last party at Holocene, after packing the venue for 6 months, the party moves to Refuge PDX every last Friday starting Feb 22nd to create more breathing room for the 500+ dancers!
