Follow on Google News | Operation Kindness Reports Record-High Adoption Numbers in 2012Operation Kindness – had a banner year in 2012, adopting out 3,164 animals. The 2012 adoption numbers were the highest in the shelter’s 36-year history, and they were more than 10% greater than in 2011.
By: Operation Kindness “Adoptions are so important – both for the animals that have found their new, forever homes – and for all the dogs and cats that need to be rescued. Because Operation Kindness is a no-kill shelter and our space is limited, we can only house so many animals at once. Every time an animal is adopted out, it gives us the opportunity to save another life,” says Julie Goff, special events manager of Operation Kindness. The Operation Kindness staff attributes the uptick in adoption numbers to a variety of factors. Chief among them is the public’s growing awareness of the shelter and passion for the cause. “We think people are discovering that they don’t need to go to a breeder or pet store anymore,” notes Nikki Walker, development director of Operation Kindness. “Shelter animals come in just about every size, breed, color and activity level you can think of.” Walker adds that cost may be an attributing factor. “It is significantly less to adopt from us than to buy from a breeder. Plus, when you adopt from Operation Kindness, vaccinations, worming, testing, microchipping and a collar and ID tag are provided at no extra charge,” she explains. At Operation Kindness, adoption fees are $110 for adult cats, $135 for kittens under one year, $160 for adult dogs and $185 for puppies under one year. Adoption fees help cover the costs of caring for the animals at Operation Kindness, such as food, medicine, tests, spay/neuter surgery, other surgeries, medical procedures, rehabilitation and recovery. Founded in 1976, Operation Kindness is the oldest and largest no-kill shelter in North Texas. Its mission is to care for homeless cats and dogs in a no-kill environment until each is adopted into responsible homes and to advocate humane values and behavior. Operation Kindness has saved nearly 70,000 animals since its inception. Operation Kindness cares for an average of 200-250 animals on a day-to-day basis, with another 60-80 animals in foster homes. More than 3,000 dogs and cats are assisted by Operation Kindness each year.
