Parent Training Workshop Changes Lives Across the Globe

Jan. 21, 2013 - PRLog -- Gordon Training International recently concluded their 50th Anniversary Parent Effectiveness Training (P.E.T.) Instructor Training Workshop. 21 participants attended, representing six countries, including Mexico, Canada, Germany, Japan, France and the U.S.  

The group was lead by Master Trainer, Steve Emmons, who has over 30 years of experience with Gordon Training and worked alongside the late Dr. Thomas Gordon. The five-day training to become a Certified P.E.T. Instructor included counselors, therapists, social workers and professionals who work with children and families across varying differences of cultural and economic backgrounds.

Many participants shared that their experience was one close to the heart.

One participant, Mr. David Day, said of the workshop,  “As an active member of the Center for the Studies of the Person, I embrace the sanctity of an "I-Thou" relationship between people. This kind of respect for the other, the child, as a human being, is fully embraced in the P.E.T. ethos. Through the practice of the skills, I experienced a strong, personal connection with my fellow instructors. I believe that, with diligence and perseverance, a similar closeness will evolve with the families we teach. The content of the instruction is thorough, and experiential: all of the instructors that graduate from the program have learned and understood by practice, and doing. We all did, and therefore understood deeply.”

When asked about his future plans as a Certified Instructor, Day said, “I plan on incorporating the full P.E.T. and Y.E.T. instruction into our "Teen-Encounters" program, effective immediately. Empathic understanding and communication is a basic requirement for any lasting, meaningful relationship. This is true for both parent and child, or more fully, I and Thou, and the Gordon Model reflects this fully in both of these programs. I also know that through the parents, I am helping the next generation of adults reach their full potential in life. This makes me feel alive.”

The P.E.T. workshop was the first of its kind that introduced methods like Active Listening, I-Messages, No-Lose Conflict Resolution and The Behavior Window.
