Cartilage Implant At Sahyadri Hospital Bibewadi: A Boon For Ankle Injuries

Little did the 40 years old active homemaker Mrs. Nalini Pawar knows that a fall while walking and twisting of her uncle could become such a painful affair. Having had no relief with medications and immobilization, the pain was excruciating enough to prevent her from bearing weight or walking on the injured leg.

City based Arthroscopy and Joint replacement surgeon from Sahyadri Hospital Bibvewadi, Dr. Amit Mahajan successfully treated a disabling ankle injury using a new and revolutionary cartilage implantation surgery. On consulting Dr. Mahajan and after having done a MRI scan, reports revealed a defect in the cartilage and the underlying bone (talus) of the ankle joint, due to the trauma.

“It was very disturbing and disabling and I could not do any of my routine household work due to the nagging pain” said Mrs. Pawar. Now thanks to the new Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation therapy (ACI), she now shall be up on her feet and back to her duties.

The surgery is done in two stages. The first step of ACI is to perform an arthroscopic keyhole surgery of the knee and harvesting cartilage tissue. This sample is then sent to a tissue regeneration center, where cartilage cells are cultured. In the second step, approximately four weeks later, the cultured cartilage cells are implanted into the cartilage defect of the ankle joint. Dr. Mahajan said “It is a revolutionary technique which heals the cartilage defects by regenerating new cartilage in the defect from patient's own cartilage cells, thereby completely relieving the patient of pain and preventing the occurrence of future arthritis”.
