Follow on Google News | Lexcode Supports UNESCO's 2013 International Mother Language Day CelebrationThe world will speak as one on February 21, 2013 to highlight the role of languages in preserving cultures across the globe. This day marks the International Mother Language Day, a timely reminder this Valentine month to love your mother tongue.
By: Lexcode Inc. Noro Andriamiseza Ingarao, UNESCO Programme Specialist for languages in education acknowledges Lexcode’s support of the event and affirmed that “translation is the future to keep linguistic diversity and promote communication between peoples of the world.” With the 2013 IMLD theme, "The Book," Lexcode further strives to be an instrument in strengthening people’s grasp of their mother tongue through written communication. In a statement shared to Lexcode, Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO said, “In this age of new technologies, books remain precious instruments… Lexcode wants to build a strong foundation for the bridges it will create. “Communication is the heart of our company. We serve many countries, yet here in the Philippines, translation is still a new, if not strange, concept. Lexcode takes on a mission to bridge this gap. Let’s love our languages because they keep us alive,” says CEO Chul Young Ham. The company itself is a reflection of today’s global village—a multilingual and multicultural community of language professionals from around the world, who helped translate millions of pages in hundreds of languages. According to its Philippine Director, Christine Ignacio, Lexcode plans to work closely with the Department of Education as well as NGOs and student groups working to protect Philippine languages and dialects through education. “We globalize when we localize—we pay homage to language by recognizing that we need to speak in one’s mother tongue to respect people’s linguistic identity and foster positive change,” she continued. Approaching its third year of foundation in March, Lexcode wants to help empower the country’s language community to collaborate towards preserving languages and becoming more visible in the global translation scene. It calls on schools, media outfits and practitioners, embassies, business and government leaders to support the cause to keep languages alive. It will hold a press conference on February 23, 2013 to launch its pocket guide on language translation and other activities for the year. For more information, please contact: Christine T.
