Gene Shapiro Auctions Sale Results

Feb. 19, 2013 - PRLog -- This past Saturday’s sale at Gene Shapiro Auctions featured a rich array of Russian and International fine and decorative art. Scenic landscapes such as Summer in the Forest by Victor Mihailovich Vasnetsov generated considerable excitement amongst collectors, selling for $48,000, about triple its original estimate (est. $8,000-12,000). Ilya Savvich Galkin’s Billiard Players also greatly exceeded expectations, selling for $45,600, more than double its high estimate of $20,000-30,000. Additionally, Patio du Musée de Coimbra, Portugal, painted by Ukranian artist Aleksei Vasilievich Gritchenko, sold for a remarkable $24,000 (est. $6,000-8,000).

As at previous auctions, Gene Shapiro presented a spectacular group of icons for sale, among these a monumental calendar icon that sold for $33,600 (est. $23,000-27,000). Other highlights included Zaporozhets After a Battle, a bronze sculpture by renowned master Evgeny Alexandrovich Lanceray that sold for $42,000, and Dmitry Plavinsky’s Owl, which achieved a price of $26,400 (est. $12,000-15,000).

Porcelain works also attracted great interest at auction. Figurines proved popular with buyers, particularly those from the Gardner Factory in Moscow. The late 19th century Figure of a Jewish Man, for instance, sold for $6,600 (est. $1,850-2,250). A Russian easter egg with painted images of the Virgin and Child surpassed its estimate as well, ultimately selling for $9,600 (est. $2,500-3,500). Objets d’art by Faberge likewise enjoyed great success, notably a silver and crystal box sold for $11,400 (est. $3,500-4,500).

The next auction to be conducted by Gene Shapiro will take place in May 2013. Consignments of Russian, American, European and Latin American fine and decorative art, well as books and militaria are currently being accepted until the middle of March.
