San Diego Accident Attorney Ross Jurewitz Discusses Stranded Carnival Cruise Ship

On February 10, 2013, an engine fire onboard a Carnival Triumph cruise ship left it adrift in the Gulf of Mexico for four days until it was towed into port in Mobile, Alabama. In the time it was stranded, passengers were left without power.

March 4, 2013 - PRLog -- San Diego, CA – Attorney Ross Jurewitz, founder of the Jurewitz Law Group, recently spoke with KFMB News 8 concerning the rights of Carnival Triumph cruise ship victims and legal options in the wake of the accident.

Damages on Stranded Cruise Ship
During his interview with KFMB, which can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IEjhRs8GqI&list=UUenfpIAOijuxn5o_gNDFD0g&index=2, Ross Jurewitz discussed customer rights under the “conditions of carriage” agreement that passengers sign to board a cruise ship. Discussion revealed that this form limits the rights of those who sign and their ability to collect if they have been harmed by the cruise line. After reaching shore in Mobile, Alabama, Carnival gave each passenger a full refund, credit for another cruise, and $500.

News coverage along with video and photos taken by passengers onboard the Triumph documented the conditions in the stranded ship as it was pulled by tugboats. In total, there were 3,143 passengers and 1,086 crew members onboard the Triumph. Due to a lack of power, running water, and working toilets, foul conditions quickly built up onboard. Some passengers described sewage overflowing in some areas of the ship, posing a hazard to those nearby. Additionally, a lack of air conditioning caused sweltering conditions in rooms, forcing many to live and sleep outside on the deck.

Injury and Illness Dangers Onboard
Unfortunately, cruise ships frequently experience accidents that affect passengers, both on an individual basis and for the ship as a whole. Dangers onboard can cause unique incidents such as slip and falls or burns that affect a single passenger. Illness breakouts also frequently occur due to the close quarters that passengers are living in for an extended period. Additionally, problems with piping can expose those onboard to hazardous waste, leading to possible infections and diseases.
