St. Louis Law Firm Now Accepting Class Action Cases for Tax Return Mistakes

Meyerkord & Meyerkord, LLC, a prominent St. Louis law firm, is now accepting class action lawsuits against tax preparation companies for blunders such as the one that recently delayed tax refunds for more than 600,000 taxpayers.

ST. LOUIS - March 13, 2013 - PRLog -- H&R Block, the nation’s largest tax preparer, was unfamiliar with the changes that the IRS made to the way that tax return forms are filled out. Whereas the IRS previously accepted blank fields on the form to mean “no”, this year the IRS required the answer “no” to be written in the field. H&R Block left a certain field blank on Form 8863 that is used to claim educational credits, and this mishap impacted approximately 10% of the 6.6 million tax returns containing Form 8863. As a result, 600,000 taxpayers are forced to wait six more weeks before they receive their refunds for the year.

Not only has this led to countless headaches and confusion, but it has also created financial hardships for many taxpayers. Among those most affected are students. One particular student filed with H&R Block just so that hers would be one of the first returns accepted when the IRS began processing and giving out education credits. Now, she is unable to pay off her line of credit and upcoming bills, and she is incurring interest charges with every passing day. Other students are struggling because they need their returns to complete tax information to file for financial aid.

The state deadlines for applying for financial aid are quickly approaching, and in order to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid students need IRS approval on their tax returns. H&R Block has been working with the IRS to expedite a solution, and in the meantime students have the option of entering their financial information manually on the Fafsa. Once their returns have been accepted, they can return to update the information.

Despite efforts to smooth over the situation, H&R Block’s Facebook page is still receiving an onslaught of complaints from taxpayers who are expressing their frustration, sharing tips, and even calling for their tax preparation fees to be refunded. Considering the vast impact of H&R Block’s mistake, it will not be surprising if lawsuits are filed against the tax preparation company for the financial hardships that resulted. With many years of trial litigation experience on their side, the St. Louis attorneys at Meyerkord & Meyerkord, LLC are prepared to take on class action lawsuits against H&R Block on the behalf of taxpayers.
